Understanding Chronic Migraines

June is recognized as National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the impact of headaches and migraines on daily life. For the more than 39 million Americans affected by migraines, the condition can be not only painful but also disruptive to work, family, and social life.

Migraines are more than just severe headaches. They are a neurological condition that can cause a wide range of symptoms including throbbing pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and visual disturbances. Some individuals experience migraines occasionally, while others live with chronic migraines, defined as 15 or more headache days per month, with at least 8 days involving migraine symptoms.

While over-the-counter medications can help in some cases, people with chronic migraines often require preventative treatment to reduce the frequency and severity of their episodes. Advances in migraine research have led to several new treatment options that focus on prevention rather than symptom management alone.

One such treatment is now available at Southwest Health. Under the care of Martha Levy, DNP, ARNP, a provider with extensive experience in managing chronic pain syndromes, Southwest Health’s Interventional Pain team is now offering Vyepti®, an IV medication designed specifically for the prevention of chronic migraines in adults.

Vyepti is delivered through a 30-minute IV infusion every 12 weeks, making it a convenient option for long-term migraine prevention. Some patients may begin to feel relief as soon as the day of their first infusion. This treatment is administered in Southwest Health’s outpatient Infusion Center, providing a safe and supportive environment for care.

Patients interested in this type of treatment must first obtain a referral from their primary care provider. For those who are not yet established with a provider, Southwest Health’s Family Medicine department can help. Call (608) 348-4330 to learn more.

By continuing to expand access to evidence-based treatments like Vyepti, Southwest Health remains committed to supporting patients in Southwest Wisconsin who are living with chronic pain and migraines. During this awareness month, it’s important to remember that help is available and that no one needs to navigate chronic migraines alone.
