Occupational Therapy Month

Ann Morley, Occupational Therapist

Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants help people after an injury, illness, surgery, mental problems, developmental delays, and aging effects. They assist their patients in overcoming this obstacle to become more independent in their lives. They focus on improving people’s abilities to perform all tasks in their daily lives. OTs work with all ages from birth to late adult years. They are effective in teaching adaptations to regain independence in patients’ lives.

Below are a couple of tips from a licensed Occupational Therapist that may help you get back to the life you enjoy.

  1. Continue actions to keep your mind and physical self in good shape. Proper sleep and diet are essential. Remember, consistency is the key! Always check with your doctor before starting a new physical routine/exercise to ensure it is right for you.
  2. There are small actions that people can do every day to improve their health. Building brain function and fine/gross motor skills will keep you as independent as possible. Here are just a few ideas:
  • Completing crosswords and word searches
  • reading
  • playing cards or board games
  • coloring
  • writing a letter
  • crafting
  • cooking/baking
  • exercising
  • going to the library
  • calling a friend
  • swimming
  • bicycling
  • listening to music or podcast
  • singing
  • playing a musical instrument

If you have trouble or difficulty taking care of yourself with routine daily tasks like dressing, bathing, household tasks, leisure activities, meals, school or work tasks because of pain, injury, disability, or illness, talk with your doctor about getting an order to receive occupational therapy to get you back to things you love.

If you think occupational therapy would be helpful for yourself or a family member, the first step is getting a referral from your doctor. Once a referral is processed, an occupational therapist will schedule your initial evaluation.

The first step? Call Southwest Health’s Rehab Services at (608) 342-4748. At Southwest Health, occupational therapists will focus on what you need and want to do to achieve your goals, stay as healthy and productive as possible, and maintain or rebuild your independence.
