Considering Radiology

If you’ve ever thought about working in healthcare, there are numerous options to choose from that you may never have considered. Radiology may be the profession that is right for you.

If you’ve ever seen an x-ray of a broken bone Radiologist Technologist took those images. These professionals use several types of equipment to gather images that help physicians diagnose patient ailments and determine the best course of action for treatment. Radiologic technologists are skilled equipment operators who know exactly how to capture the images they need and play an important role in patient care and the healthcare community. They ensure the quality of the captured images, maintain imaging equipment and assist the radiologists in making their diagnoses.

Anyone considering a field in Radiology Technology should have the following characteristics:

  • good communication
  • teamwork/collaboration
  • computer literacy
  • physical abilities
  • problem-solving
  • attention to detail.

A school will train a technologist on the following: operation of radiology equipment, patient care and positioning, radiation protection, patient education, and instructions.

The program length can be two years for an associate degree, or students can choose a bachelor’s program. Opportunity for career advancement is high. Variable hours and shifts are available at either a hospital or clinic setting.

“In my nearly 40 years in this field, I have seen and embraced how radiology has evolved. The change has kept me interested and up to date on newer technologies. It is fun and exciting to continually learn a new way of doing things. Plus, the nature of the healthcare setting offers plenty of variety and excitement. Most days are full of assisting different patients with different diagnostic imaging needs, leaving little chance of getting bored.” JoAnn Geissbuhler, Director of Radiology at Southwest Health

The best part of being a radiologic technologist is that it’s something you can feel proud of at the end of each day. You will be part of a highly honored and respected field.
