People may think that tanning beds are a safe alternative to sun exposure during the winter months, but they are not. The harmful UV radiation is still present, and significantly increases risk of developing skin cancer, especially melanoma. Even though the sun might feel less intense during the winter, UV rays are still strong enough to damage skin, and tanning beds amplify that damage.
Here are a few reasons why tanning beds should be avoided, especially during the winter.
- UV Radiation is Always Harmful: Whether it’s summer or winter, tanning beds emit ultraviolet (UV) radiation that can damage skin cells and increase risk of developing skin cancer. This damage accumulates over time, which means the more exposed to UV radiation, the higher the risk.
- Increased Risk of Melanoma: Studies have shown that using tanning beds increases the risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, particularly for those who start using them before the age of 30. Melanoma can develop quickly and is more difficult to treat once it spreads.
- No Safe Way to Tan: There is no such thing as a “safe tan.” The tanning process itself is a form of skin damage. When skin turns brown, it is responding to UV damage, which leads to premature aging and increases the likelihood of skin cancer later in life.
- Winter Sun Still Poses a Risk: Even during the colder months, UV rays are still present and can damage skin. Snow can also reflect UV rays, intensifying exposure. For this reason, wearing sunscreen year-round is critical—even when the temperature drops.
Dermatologists are seeing a significant increase in Melanoma especially in young adults. Using a tanning bed significantly increases the risk of Melanoma. When a melanoma is caught in its earliest form, it can most often be easily treated with an in-office excision and close follow-up. When Melanoma is found late that person often requires extensive oncology intervention and radiation in addition to surgical excision. In the winter months, consider these safer options:
- Self-Tanners: These products are a safe alternative and provide a bronzed look without the risk of UV damage. Just be sure to apply them evenly and follow the instructions.
- Bronzing Lotions or Sprays: Many bronzing lotions or sprays provide a natural-looking tan without causing any harm to skin. Be sure to choose one with no UV exposure.
- Healthy Skin Habits: Embrace natural skincare routines like moisturizing, exfoliating, and hydrating. Healthy, glowing skin doesn’t need to be tanned to be beautiful!
Even though it’s winter and may be craving that golden tan, tanning beds are never a safe choice. The UV radiation they emit accelerates skin damage and increases the risk of skin cancer. Instead, focus on protecting the skin and exploring safer alternatives to achieve a beautiful, healthy complexion year-round!
