Florence Nightingale was the pioneer of nursing; often referred to as “the Lady with the Lamp” since she always made rounds at night in the hospitals caring for wounded and sick soldiers in the 1800’s. Florence was born on May 12th which is why Nurses’ week is celebrated May 5th through May 12th in honor of her. Florence revolutionized nursing in her time; she focused on making the environment clean and safe to get the best outcome for her patients. In one of her first assignments, soldiers were dying from the hospital conditions rather than their war injuries and she made prevention and standard of care a priority. Because of her focus, she was able to reduce patient deaths by two-thirds.
The Nightingale group at Southwest Health focuses on clinical aspects of the hospital and utilizes best practice research to implement the most up to date care to our patients.
