I think back to my youth when I was growing up on a small dairy farm in North Dakota. Brutal winters, dry, hot, windy summers. The weather never seemed to cooperate, but we tolerated it and worked through it for the love of the family farm. I remember the struggles. The highs and the lows.
Only a few years were the conditions ever as poor as they are this year. Terribly wet, cold temperatures and markets that are extremely unpredictable. On top of the weather, the U.S. Department of Labor recognizes agriculture as having one of the highest occupational illness rates.
Your struggle is real. You are not alone.
There is no way to control Mother Nature and what she delivers. But don’t forget about taking care of yourself. I understand it may be difficult, and it’s often the last thing on your mind. Your family needs you healthy. Your community needs you. And the world needs you. We at Southwest Health stand with you during this difficult time.
I sometimes feel helpless in what I can do, but I can do is encourage you and thank you for everything you do from putting food on our tables to supporting our communities. Because you work so hard, our food is the most abundant, safest, and affordable in the world. For that, I want to let you know we are all wishing for brighter days ahead.
You are the backbone of our region, and we stand with you! Thank You!
