A Homecoming for New Family Physician

Southwest Health welcomes Family Physician Jessica Schmid, DO, to our growing team of primary care practitioners at the Platteville Clinic at Southwest Health.

Originally from Dodgeville, Wisconsin, Dr. Schmid is excited to come home to southwest Wisconsin to live and work. “My favorite part of practicing family medicine is really getting to know patients and their families and forming a good working relationship with them,” says Dr. Schmid. “A small town with a great team like the one at Southwest Health offers a great chance to provide people the high level of holistic care I think they deserve.”

She performed her undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin in Madison before going on to earn her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. She then returned to Wisconsin where she completed her Family Medicine Residency at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee.

Throughout her training, she has worked with patients with a diverse range of issues, and she begins her Platteville practice with the skill and experience to provide a full spectrum of family medical care, including labor and delivery of expectant mothers.

“We are delighted to recruit Dr. Schmid back to our area,” says Southwest Health Chief Operating Officer Steve McCarthy. “Her skills and knowledge are an outstanding addition to our very talented Medical Staff. She also brings a friendly and engaging personality that is a great fit with our team.”

McCarthy also notes Southwest Health’s successes defy national and state trends when it comes to recruiting doctors. “We have an incredibly strong Medical Staff for a rural region” he says. “While other areas of the nation are challenged in dealing with physician shortages, we are proud to bring the people of our area a truly exceptional staff of local expert practitioners in both Platteville and in Cuba City. That says a lot about the quality of our local health care system.”

As a doctor of osteopathy, Dr. Schmid also offers patients holistic methods of healing and pain relief. Both MDs and DOs are fully qualified doctors, yet osteopathic medicine offers added alternative dimensions of care. So, in addition to the full range of medical knowledge, DOs also employ a combination of movement, stretching, and deep tissue massage and manipulation of muscles and joints that can help improve function, relieve pain, and aid recovery from illness and injury.

In her spare time, Dr. Schmid enjoys hiking, camping, and spending time with friends and family.
