Southwest Health Takes Major Step Forward in Battle Against Cancer
Southwest Health is bringing the battle against cancer closer to home with a new cancer doctor coming to Platteville in August. Cancer care specialist Emily J. Guerard, MD, faculty member of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, will provide a wide range of chemotherapy, oncology, and hematology services at Southwest Health.
“The people of our area deserve world class cancer care right here close to home,” says Robb Pastor Southwest Health Chief Clinical Officer. “Reducing the burden of travel and supporting patients locally is a major step forward in helping patients with cancer. That’s why we’re proud to be bringing Dr. Guerard to Platteville. Her expertise will help patients get advanced therapies and the very latest treatment options without having to travel so far from home during their illness.”
Dr. Guerard is board certified in both Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine. She is an assistant professor at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and also practices at the UW Carbone Cancer Center in Madison. A Wisconsin native, she completed her undergraduate work at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. She completed residencies in both Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She then advanced her training by completing a three year fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Says Dr. Guerard, “I am excited to be joining the team at Southwest Health. By working to understand each patient’s unique diagnosis and needs, we will develop comprehensive cancer treatment plans that are personalized to each individual.”
Dr. Guerard will see patients at Southwest Health on the first and third Wednesday of each month beginning August 3rd, and chemotherapy will be provided at that location on a daily basis.
Among Dr. Guerard’s many awards and accolades is a 2015 Merit Award from the American Society for Clinical Oncology’s Conquer Cancer Foundation. Says Pastor, “In addition to being a true expert in the fields of oncology and hematology, patients will find Dr. Guerard to be a very caring specialist, personally dedicated to aggressively treating cancer and supporting her patients.”
