Homecoming for New Family Nurse Practitioner
[Platteville, WI] — Southwest Health announces the addition of Family Nurse Practitioner Kori Schumacher-Barry, APNP, to the Medical Staff at the Platteville Clinic. With more than 19 years of healthcare experience and a stellar educational background that includes graduating with honors from Palmer College of Chiropractic, the University of Iowa, and Clarke University, Ms. Barry brings a proven record of outstanding abilities in providing high quality patient care.
In addition to seeing patients at the Platteville Clinic at Southwest Health, Ms. Barry is providing care two days per week at Student Health Services on the University of Wisconsin – Platteville campus.
A native of Platteville and the daughter of long-time local residents Jean and Richard Schumacher, Ms. Barry has returned to her hometown to help care for a community that means much to her personally. “I’m very excited to come back and make a difference in my community,” she says. “Everything I’ve done in my career has prepared me incredibly well for my new role. I consider it an incredible privilege to help the people of southwest Wisconsin get well and live well.”
Having served patients as a chiropractor and as a nurse, Ms. Barry is uniquely qualified to provide holistic primary care throughout her patients’ life spans. Ms. Barry attended UW-Eau Claire and UW-LaCrosse for her undergraduate education. She graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa, in 1996 with her Doctorate in Chiropractic, and she gained a decade of valuable healthcare experience through her chiropractic practice. She then returned to school at the University of Iowa to complete her first of three nursing degrees. She then went on to work the next eight years as a pediatric nurse at the American Family Children’s Hospital affiliated with the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, where she gained additional experience in medical and surgical care, hematology/oncology, neurology, ENT, pediatric intensive care, and neonatal intensive care. During this time she also attended Clarke University and subsequently earned her Master of Science in Nursing as a Nurse Educator, and a Post-Masters Certificate as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
With her extensive education and hands-on training, Ms. Barry is especially interested in supporting patients in wellness and preventive care. She says, “Connecting with people and helping improve their health is what I’m most passionate about. One of the most important things we can do as providers is to get to know our patients. When we think of nurses, we think of someone who cares and is compassionate. Combine that with my medical experience and education, and you have someone who can build trust and help patients to better health.”
Outside of work Ms. Barry enjoys spending time with her family, including 10 year old son, Andrew, who is an avid pianist and is actively involved in school sports. “It’s rewarding to come back. I’m very proud to be raising a son, attending sporting events, and being a voice for a positive healthcare experience in our great community,” she says.
Ms. Barry is accepting new patients. Appointments can be made by calling the Platteville Clinic at Southwest Health at 348-4330.
