There are a growing number of patients with dementia along with new variants of the "Alzheimer's diseases." Dr. Cooper, Director of The Memory Center in La Crosse, WI, will present recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of dementing illnesses and will illustrate the predicted incidence of Alzheimer's disease in the coming decades.

This presentation will address the particular aspects of anticipatory grief surrounding the losses of dementia. This is a topic that will touch patients, care-givers, family and friends differently. Identification of these issues will be discussed as well as coping mechanisms.

Dr. Norton will present a thorough description of late-life depression including, prevalence at home and in the nursing home, risk factors, suicide risks, the many causes of depression, as well as differentiating between depression and other illness such as dementia. In addition, Dr. Norton will discuss the various treatment options including counseling, therapies, and pharmacotherapy.

This multi-disciplinary team from Sunnycrest Manor, Dubuque, IA, has made resident-centered care their specialty. Many long term care facilities have already implemented these policies but are you where you hoped your facility would be at this point? During this presentation participants will identify components of the person-centered care model of care, discuss strategies for implementing these practices, and identify methods for measuring the quality and effectiveness of person-centered care practices.
