The major fundraising project of the Southwest Health Center Foundation this year is the purchase of a digital mammography machine for the Radiology Department. Proceeds from the Fourth Annual Golf Jamboree and the Strawberry Festival 5K Run/Walk are directed toward the purchase of the Fuji Computed Radiography for Mammography (FCRm) System.
While traditional film screen mammography remains an effective tool for detecting breast cancer, more breast imaging facilities have been actively seeking a digital screening solution. Digital mammography screening reveals significant benefits for a considerable percentage of the screening population. Digital mammography takes an image of the breast and stores it directly in a computer. Advantages of the digital screening and storage process over traditional film include increased image quality, improved ease of image access, transmission, retrieval and storage. This will facilitate long-distance consultations with other mammography specialists and allow for easy comparison between current mammograms and previous mammograms.
Additionally, the FCRm System specifically offers the benefit of not requiring replacement of the existing mammography acquisition unit, significantly lowering the digital conversion cost. For a site like Southwest Health Center that offers both general radiography exams as well as mammography exams, the FCRm system offers multi-purpose capabilities.
