Visitors

New mothers are free to have visitors stop by and share the joy of a new birth. However, to ensure privacy and rest for new mothers and safety for babies, we ask visitors to follow these guidelines:

  • Fathers, grandparents, and brothers and sisters of the baby may visit you anytime in your room.
  • Mothers and fathers are allowed in the nursery under nurse supervision. All other visitors may look through the nursery window or see the baby in the mother's room.
  • For the baby's well-being, all visitors must wash their hands before holding the baby.
  • The nurse in charge of Great Beginnings is responsible for monitoring visitors.

During Labor

Although we understand and encourage the presence of a support person(s) during labor, we ask that no more than two persons are present. We encourage you to make arrangements in advance for one or two primary support person(s) and ask others to not visit until after you have delivered. By limiting visitation during labor, we allow you the important freedom to make informed and uninterrupted decisions about your childbirth experience.

Great Beginnings Classes

There is no greater experience in life than giving birth to a child. Our classes provide the confidence and knowledge you need to make your child’s birth the joyful experience it should be.

Our classes give you a better understanding of the growth of your baby, the changes taking place in your body, and the process of labor and delivery. We focus on what you need to know during and after labor, including what happens during each stage of labor, breathing and relaxation techniques, complications, taking care of your newborn, and post-partum concerns.

One-day classes are held on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It’s best to attend the program nearest your due date. The class costs $40 for those delivering at SHC and $45 for those delivering elsewhere.

For up-to-date class schedules and further information, we invite you to call us at 348-2331.

This class is designed for new and experienced moms. It provides a step-by-step guide through breastfeeding basics, proper technique and other helpful hints! Classes are held on Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and cost $5.

For up-to-date class schedules and further information, we invite you to call us at 348-2331.

Breast Pump Rentals

Research shows that a mother's natural milk is better for her babies.  Therefore, SHC rents breast milk pumps for new moms. These portable breast milk pumps are conveniently sized and come with their own carrying bag. The pumps are designed to pump both breasts at the same time for ease of use. For more information, call (608) 348-2331.
